Lao Khmu Association, Inc., incorporated in 1983 as a 501 (c) (3) Mutual Assistance Association, assists Southeast Asian refugees and immigrants living in San Joaquin County, California, in overcoming social and economic problems that hinder their ability to become independent and self-sufficient members of the community. Since its inception, the LKA has provided a wide variety of needed services to the five predominant Southeast Asian populations: Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, Hmong, and Khmu refugees and immigrants and their family members. The staff of LKA appropriately reflects the ethnicity and language groups of these five populations. In addition to general translation, information, and referral services, LKA has developed several programs that address more complex social services, and employment services. These include, but are not limited to crisis intervention, emergency response, health accessing services, counseling in child abuse and youth delinquency cases, vocational training, employment placement, and on-the-job training.

This is an exciting issue indeed! This year's Summer issue contains fresh work from a new and diverse Lao Vision staff. Surviving and Thriving in America reminds us of our history, challenges, and demonstrates how the Lao have survived and succeeded in their new lives in the Americas. This issue was written not just for our promising youth, it rejoices in the successes of our Lao professionals, and also peeks into the eyes and minds of our much respected elders. Lao Vision's Summer 2003 Issue is dedicated to all those who give color, depth, and pride in being Lao.
